Metro Children’s Water Festival

  • Minnesota State Fairgrounds 1265 Snelling Avenue North Saint Paul, MN, 55108 United States (map)

The annual festival is produced for 4th grade students in the Minneapolis and St. Paul metropolitan area and is held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The festival teaches children about water resources and how they can help ensure a future where both the quantity and quality of water resources are protected and managed wisely.

Students learn how scientists measure water quality, the water cycle, where water goes when the toilet is flushed, how tiny bugs are indicators of water quality, the importance of wetlands, basic water science, and more. About 1,300 students from the seven county metropolitan counties celebrate our most precious resource: water. See our Facebook page.

In-Person Festival

The in-person festival will take place at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. Classes will arrive between 8:50 am to 10:50 am and depart between 12:35 to 2:35 pm. Reimbursements for bussing costs may be available.

The entirety of the 25th annual festival will take place outdoors and students will only participate in learning stations with their class – there will be no indoor activities nor mixing of classes. The planning committee will follow all Minnesota Department of Education recommendations and guidelines. As such, if guidelines surrounding gatherings change, or in the event of rain or inclement weather, the in-person festival will be canceled, and all classes will be encouraged to participate in the virtual festival.

Virtual Festival

Taking place completely virtually, this option is great for those who aren’t selected for the in-person festival, or those who want to learn about water directly from the classroom. Those who attend the in-person festival are welcome to explore this content as well!

Learn about hydrology, the chemical and physical properties of water, invasive species, and more!
