Louise served on the WCD board for more than 20 years. She and her husband Gene own 325 acres of land in Cottage Grove and rent an addition 375 acres from nearby landowners.

The Smallidges employ a variety of conservation practices on their land, including grassed waterways, rotational grazing, and conservation tillage, and were honored as the WCD Outstanding Conservationists in 1975.
